Christmas Eve is the evening of December 24, the day before the first day of Christmas in the Christian Christmas celebration. In Norway and the Nordic countries, traditional celebrations on Christmas Eve, with church services, family dinners, walks around the Christmas tree and gift giving, have been highlights of the Christmas celebrations.

The Christmas holiday itself starts on the first day of Christmas, so Christmas Eve is not a public holiday. It's more like a Saturday.
