    The Sami National Day is 6 February. The day is also referred to by some as Sami People's Day and Sami People's Day. The National Day was adopted by the Sami Conference in 1992 and is common to all Sami in Norway, Finland, Sweden and Russia. It was celebrated for the first time in 1993 at the same time as the UN's International Indigenous Year was officially opened in Karasjok.

    You may be wondering why we celebrate toothache? I have no idea ...
    Many people may be thinking about brushing their teeth, or flossing to celebrate, but this is NOT a toothache PREVENTION day. The only way to celebrate is therefore by getting a real, living toothache. If you are one of those who have one can I suggest one of the remedies below? Just do not try it until February 10th.     Shrove Tuesday (not a public holiday, but always falling on a Sunday)



    Shrove Tuesday will always fall on a Sunday 49 days (7 weeks) before the first day of Easter, ie in the period 1 February to 7 March, (or in leap years 2 February to 7 March).



    The word fastelavn itself comes from the German word vastel-avent which means fasting evening, ie "the evening before fasting".
    The name is pronounced "fastelaven", and is often misspelled as such.
