Summer solstice is the time when the Earth is at the point of the orbit, where the northern hemisphere is most strongly inclined towards the sun. When the sun is in the south in the middle of the day, it has its greatest height above the horizon in the year, and it is the day that has the greatest day length. In everyday speech it is often said that the sun turns at this time. At the Tropic of Cancer, the sun reaches the zenith in the middle of the day at this time.
